![]() Forget Avian Flu: The Real Health Threat America Faces
I desperately want to alert you to a health threat that is both insidious and largely unrecognized. A threat far more real and imminent than the risks posed today by the Avian flu to the You may be asking what is this and how come I haven't heard about it? The answer to the first question, what is it, is Syndrome X, Insulin Resistance or Metabolic Disorder. In less affluent or immigrant communities, the number drops to 1 in 6 or 7. The implication of what the NY Times reported will certainly be devastating to those who will suffer.. But there will also be other consequences. The medical cost to treat the people affected, rich and poor, will be enormous. The second question is why haven't I heard much about this. The answer is two-fold. The first, most doctors just don't get it. When you visit the doctor and mention your lack of energy, the mood swings, unexplained weight gain or joint stiffness, their training tells them to "shower" you with prescription drugs. Truth is, while these drugs may help alleviate the symptoms, they do nothing to improve your underlying health! The second answer, also just reported in the New York Times on January 11th in an article entitled "In the Treatment of Diabetes, Success Often Does Not Pay" observes that the medical establishment is phasing out preventive, low-cost health programs to deal with the increasing threat of diabetes because there's just not enough money in it. They point out that "insurers, for example, will often refuse to pay $150 for a diabetic to see a podiatrist, who can help prevent foot ailments associated with the disease. Nearly all of them, though, cover amputations, which typically cost more than $30,000 and that patients have trouble securing a reimbursement for a $75 visit to the nutritionist who counsels them on controlling their diabetes. Insurers do not balk, however, at paying $315 for a single session of dialysis, which treats one of the disease's serious complications." Ladies & Gentleman Forget Your Doctor: Now's The Time to Take Control of Your Own Health! I think I've made my position clear. With few exceptions your doctor and the medical establishment at large are not there to protect you from the risks Syndrome X poses to you, your family and friends. The good news is that there are several things you can do to minimize the risk you face of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, joint and muscle pain and fatigue. You've heard several of them before: · Eat a balanced diet · Get plenty of rest (at least seven preferably eight hours nightly) · Drink 6 or more 8 ounce glasses of water a day · Don't smoke and if you do, quit. · Get regular exercise. In addition to these overall, good sense things you should do, health researchers like Dr. Richard A. Anderson, a Senior Scientist at the USDA Research Center, say's there are several key nutritional supplements you can take that work with your body to combat the effects of Syndrome X. The first is an extract of Cinnamon. Dr. Anderson found that 250 mg daily of the Cinnamon Extract (known commercially as Cinnulin PF) which contains the Type A Polymer stimulates glucose metabolism. Coenzyme Q10 May Slow Functional Decline in Parkinson's Disease A review article published in CNS Drugs highlighting new and emerging therapies for the treatment of Parkinson's disease indicates that coenzyme Q10 is a promising treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease. Results of studies related to coenzyme Q10 treatment in Parkinson's disease suggests that it slows down functional decline and can have a symptomatic, neuroprotective and neurorestorative effect Homeopathy May Benefit Patients with Chronic Diseases A 6-year study, reported in the Journal Alternative Complimentary Medicine, of 6,544 patients with a wide range of chronic conditions, showed that homeopathic intervention can provide positive health changes to a substantial proportion of the patients. The patients received routine homeopathic care at an outpatient clinic of the Bristol Homeopathic Hospital, a UK National Health Service Hospital. At the end of every follow-up consultation, patient outcomes based on scores on a 7-point Likert-type scale were assessed as overall outcomes compared to their baseline assessments. Of all the patients, 50.7% rated their overall health change as better or much better, while 70.7% of the patients reported some degree of improvement. Thus, this study suggests that homeopathic treatment may benefit patients with a wide range of chronic ailments, and warrants further studies using different designs to further research the effectiveness of homeopathy Yoga Helps Alleviate Mental Distress A controlled study conducted at the University of Duisberg-Essen in Germany involving 24 women (mean age: 37.9 years) with self-perceived mental distress, showed that participation in a 3-month yoga program consisting of two 90-minute classes per week, significantly improved the mental attitudes of the participants. Subjects were divided into two groups - Group 1 consisted of 16 women who participated in the 3-month yoga program ("Iyengar yoga"), and Group 2 consisted of 8 women who were put on a waiting list, who served as controls. Subjects completed various tests to measure different aspects of psychological health and well-being both before the yoga program, and again after the 3-month yoga program. Significant improvements were seen in the women who participated in the yoga program, as compared with the control group. Specifically, improvements in perceived stress, and on scores of tests measuring anxiety, well-being, vigor, fatigue, and depression, were found. In addition, improvements in physical well-being, such as marked pain relief, were experienced by women who had complained of headaches and back pain at the start of the study. This study suggests that yoga may have a significant role to play in safely and effectively reducing stress and improving mental/psychological health in women experiencing mental distress
