Syndrome X: The Silent Killer Affecting 1 in 4 Americans Today

From Dr. Floyd Taub and The Research Team of Biocentric Health
(Part 2 in a Two-Part Series of Articles)

A few days ago, I wrote about the risks of Syndrome X, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, fatigue and muscle aches. Today, I'm going to tell you about 6 more nutrients you should begin taking that will help you fight this insidious killer.

Manganese & Vanadium

Manganese and vanadium are trace minerals that have a positive effect on sugar metabolism in the insulin pathway. Studies report that these minerals help normalize several diabetes-related abnormalities in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Vanadium enhances the effect of insulin already in the body, and is emerging as a possible preventative for some types of cancer.*

Carotenoids

Natural carotenoids are essential, botanically-based antioxidants that, according to some studies, have a protective impact on cancer and other degenerative diseases. They are also shown to normalize blood pressure and support the heart and circulatory health. One study of 1,300 older people found that those who followed a diet rich in carotenoids were half as likely to develop heart disease, and 75% less likely to have a heart attack as those who did not.

B Vitamins

"B" vitamins are an important because of their ability to boost the health of the pancreas, heart, and overall circulatory system. Of the B Complex vitamins, B3 also known as Nicinamide and B8 known as Biotin may be the two most important in reducing the risks of Syndrome X.

Biotin (B8) and Niacinamide (B3) have been shown in study after study to not only help normalize blood sugar, but also improve overall pancreas health and prevent the onset of diabetes. And B-complex vitamins like B3, B6, folic acid and B12 are well recognized for treating unhealthy cholesterol levels and lowering high homocysteine levels an even better marker of poor heart health than cholesterol itself.*

Magnesium

Over 20% of the population is estimated to be deficient in this "forgotten" yet very important mineral. Scientists now believe that magnesium could well be a key nutrient for stomping out Syndrome X. People with adequate amounts of magnesium seem to have a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes. Magnesium also improves insulin-mediated glucose uptake, as well as boosts cardiovascular health.

Green tea

Green tea is packed with powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, which may be even more potent than vitamin C and vitamin Ein their ability to mop up the dangerous free radicals that cause illness and disease. But one of the most interesting aspects of Green Tea with respect to Syndrome X is its innate ability to reduce body fat and abdominal weight.

Doctors Miss Coronary Disease In Women: What We Can All Learn

Two of the nation's most respected medical journals; "Circulation" and the "Journal of The American College of Cardiology" reported Wednesday February 1, 2006 that "women are more likely than men to have a hidden type of coronary disease in which their heart muscles are starved for oxygen even though their coronary arteries look clear and are free of blockages on x-rays."

This condition, the Journal's report, "may affect 3 million American women and greatly increases the risk of a heart attack." The cause of this hidden disease doctors speculate is a buildup of fatty deposits inside the walls of the coronary arteries and in the very small arteries in the heart itself. It is not clear why women seem to be more prone to this hidden vascular disease, the researchers said, though it may be linked to hormonal imbalances and a greater tendency to suffer from inflammation, a newly discovered key risk factor for artery disease.

Since this condition is often not recognized, the study found the women can suffer more debilitating consequences from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes than men in their same age category. The "take-away" from this study is that women should be treated more aggressively by their doctors for these risk factors.

What We Can All Learn From The New Studies

  • Technology has its limit's. X-Rays and Angiograms can miss key artery blockages and damage to the heart.
  • It is important for all of us to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking (if we smoke) and manage stress better.
  • Don't settle for doctor comments, "all your test results came back fine." Ask questions! This is especially true is you have a family history of problems.
  • Explore all available treatment options.

Key Health Alert: PSA Screening Tests May Not Reduce Risk of Dying From Prostate Cancer

Despite continued advances in screening, the PSA test and the Digital Rectal Exam performed by doctors may not do enough to reduce the risk of dying from prostate cancer. This is the finding reported in the January 9th issue of the "Archives of Internal Medicine."

The study author, Dr. John Concato M.D/M.P.H. from the Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare System and Yale University, noted that in study of 1,002 men aged 50 and older that those who received screening had a mortality rate equal to or greater than those men who did not receive screening. The implication of this, according to Dr. Concato is "if prostate cancer screening prevented death, fewer men who died would have received screening compared to the men who were living. In addition, "screening was not found to reduce mortality among men who were younger or healthier."

The Responsible Approach:

The Establishment Medical Community has reacted harshly to Dr. Concato's findings and has questioned the advisability of dis-counting the value PSA and Digital Rectal Exams. Based on this, the responsible approach continues to be to speak regularly with your doctor about PSA screening and your risk of prostate cancer and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is the medical term used by doctors to define an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate may be the result of an inflection, recent exercise or sex and several other factors. BPH is fairly common in older men and while not considered very serious should also be evaluated by a licensed medical professional.

For more information on the early warning signs of BPH and the natural alternatives available to men, you may want to visit the Biocentric Health web site. A nutritional supplement that supports a healthy prostate is Prostaris. You can also learn more about Prostaris by calling 877-880-7800
